The number of novel coronavirus cases aboard a quarantined cruise ship off the coast of Japan nearly doubled Monday as officials announced 65 new patients have been diagnosed with the infection.
The new figures bring the total number of cases on the Diamond Princess vessel to 135.
The ship, which has been under quarantine since last Tuesday, was already the largest center of infections outside the Chinese mainland.
Those who were diagnosed with the disease would be taken to local hospitals for treatment while the vessel remains quarantined through at least Feb 19.
The Diamond Princess, operated by California-based Princess Cruise Lines, is anchored at Yokohoma, just south of Tokyo.
Cruise officials began screening some of the 3,711 passengers and crew members after an 80-year-old Hong Kong man tested positive for the virus.
Passengers were told to avoid leaving their rooms and employees began wearing surgical masks while dropping off food outside passengers' doors to limit human contact.
